Farmer in Kutunga
Mark worked as a Wheat Farmer until about 1914 in Katunga, Victoria. He also owned a Sheep Farm in 1914 in Majors Line, Victoria. Mark & Nancy's first child, Janett Heather Hayes was born in Numurkah 8th February 1914 while the family were on the Katunga property. She was always known as Heather.
Accomplished wife
Nancy was an accomplished seamstress and milliner. She led a group of ladies at the church who sewed dresses for the aboriginals. She was also a very good cook and could cook meals for over 30 people when the shearers came to shear the sheep. She was a strong capable woman.
Farmer in Barfold
Mark was a farmer until about 1932. The State Electoral Rolls include Mark and Anne (Nancy) on the lists for Barfold in 1922 and 1931. Their names are not included for 1912 nor 1941. Thus they arrived some time after 1912 but before 1922. They left sometime after 1931 but before 1941. Also, Heather wrote in her personal story that they left Katunga when she was a baby and she was born Feb 1914. In this story she mentions that they lived on 3 different Barfold properties during that time. We also know from Ruth Hayes that her father Edward bought Mark's final Barfold property probably about 1932 when they left the district.
On 4 September 1921, Reginald Alan Stewart Hayes was born in Kyneton, when Heather was seven years old.
In about 1932, Mark bought a property just out of Lancefield for his sheep but they lived in the town as a family. With them in town, they had a cow and chooks, plus lambs from the property to be raised by bottle.
