Alfred Hayes (1866-1942)
Alfred Hayes was born on 21 June 1866 in Tooborac. He was the second of Mark and Maria's children to be born in "Leicester House" rather than a tent. At Albert's birth, he had eight living siblings: one sister and seven brothers. Joseph had been born less than 3 years previously in November 1863. Tragically Joseph drowned as a three year old in September 1866 when baby Alfred was only 3 months old. The family must have been devastated and little Alfred would have been oblivious.
In July 1868 when Alfred was two years old, the last of his siblings, Albert, was also born at "Leicester House". He still had one sister and seven brothers.
While at school, his cousin Lottie Rainey would stand up for him when the children poked fun at him. He lived at Tooborac in a brick home his father had left him. According to Jack Hayes, he collected and delivered the mail to all the Hayes families in Tooborac.
He never married and must have been health impaired as his father wrote him into his will as requiring care by his siblings.
Alfred had been kindly looked after my his niece, Sarah Donaldson, who never married.
Alfred died 10 August 1942 and was buried beside his parents at the Heathcote Cemtery.
