Mark Hayes built Leicester House. Mark's son, Mark Henry stayed on the property and ran the property with his wife Kate, son George and daughter Polly. Mark Henry's son George then married Maude Pryor and they raised their ten children there. George ran Merino sheep on the property. Leicester House was restored in about 2015 and is once more lived in by a young family. |

Edward and Sarah Hayes and their family had been living in Tooborac but now needed a larger home. With the nest so full, the family had outgrown the previous house. On the 18th March 1904, Edward contracted the architect W A Walton to build his family of ten a beautiful villa. The property had been called ‘Mimosa Glen’ because it had been covered in Mimosa wattles. As Edward and his sons cleared them, they stripped the bark and sold the bark off to a tannery down in Melbourne. The children were all well grown when beautiful "Mimosa Glen" was finished and they family moved in in 1908. |
Of Edward and Sarah's eight children, only two were married at the house. In the August of 1909, Edward & Sarah's first child, Mary Jane, married Thomas Davies at Mimosa Glen. Their youngest daughter Violet married Leslie Bragge at Mimosa Glen in 1921.
Mark & Maria's youngest son Leslie and his bride Grace took over the running of the property in 1928 when Edward and Sarah retired to the city of Melbourne. In 1938, Grace was dragged by a horse causing leg damage. This meant that the family had to re-locate to Melbourne for ease of medical care. They sadly sold Mimosa Glen in 1938 after ten happy years. |
Glenora and Medburn are only 300 metres apart opposite and slightly east of Mimosa Glen on the south side of the Lancefield-Tooborac Road.
