Valiant and Brave
- Many of our Hayes relatives have served in the armed forces in several different wars on various fronts in a variety of time frames from the Boer War to current conflicts. Some of them returned to tell the tale; some did not.
- On this page we wish to honour all the Hayes soldiers who have fought on our behalf.
- We have endeavoured to include every Hayes relative who has done service but please let us know if we have missed someone. We would love to include them all. Photos would be most welcome. They are listed in alphabetically order by surname.
- Click on the named buttons to the right of the service personnel for further details of their service. If there is no button then we are looking for information to add.
- You comments, information and corrections are always welcome.

William Joseph 'Joe' HAYES ~ 1876 - 1944Service No. V 91645, 3rd Garrison Battalion
Joe served in the Boer War and then in the Great War with his brother Albert. His brother died in battle in WW1. When WW2 broke out, his intense loyalty was evinced in his desire to again serve his country and he joined the 3rd and 9th Garrison Battalions and gave service at several Australia coastal points that were under guard. He served for fourteen months from Dec 1940 to Jan 1942. Joe enlisted in the WW2 when he was 64 years old and died when he was 67. The Enlistment papers give his age as 54 and this photo certainly belies his 60 plus years. |

Vietnam War ~ 1962 - 1975Australia's military involvement in the Vietnam War was the longest in duration of any war in Australia's history.
The arrival of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam during July and August 1962 was the beginning of Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War. Australia's participation in the war was formally declared at an end when the Governor-General issued a proclamation on 11 January 1973. The only combat troops remaining in Vietnam were a platoon guarding the Australian embassy in Saigon, which was withdrawn in June 1973. The Australian commitment consisted predominantly of army personnel, but significant numbers of air force and navy personnel and some civilians also took part. |
